Alberta Rochefort has fled her home state of Maine to avoid an unwanted engagement orchestrated by her powerful and domineering father. She has sought refuge in the small town of Milton, Louisiana where she meets and befriends the poverty-stricken Keegan family. At the same time she meets the attractive and fascinating but obnoxious Flynn McCormack whom she immediately alienates when she comes to the aid of the Keegans after he threatens to evict them from his land.

Flynn McCormack is furious that this well-to-do, haughty woman dared to interfere in his business and swears to make her pay. To his delight that opportunity comes sooner than expected. Using the Keegans to blackmail Alberta he demands that she work for him on his small farm for seven days. He delights in forcing her to do the most menial jobs he can find, milking, cleaning, washing, and on occasion, even more intimate tasks.
But McCormack had not counted on Alberta’s indomitable spirit and her determination not to let him win the war without a fight. But worse, he had not been prepared for his growing admiration and attraction to this spoiled but kind-hearted, strong willed and sexy woman.
But when Alberta’s life is threatened they have to put aside their animosity and mistrust of one another to discover who in the small town of Milton wants to harm her.

The hero was too much of a jerk--over and over and OVER again--for me to give a higher rating. Too bad since the other characters were likeable. EDITED TO ADD: I can understand that the loner hero does not know how to deal with his feelings, and feels bad and apologizes (some of the time) after being a jerk. However, after about the 3rd time, I would've hoped for some growth for the hero (i.e. he thinks something mean but is able to stop himself from saying it). That's not what happens at all.Product details

Sparks fly in this story between the main characters.
Alberta is a very down to earth female even if she does come from a rich family. She's humble, witty, and doesn't give up in the face of adversary. Flynn is an alpha male who comes off as obnoxious and grumpy who's first impression of the heroine is that she's the typical rich girl.So when she comes to the Keegan family's rescue he sets up a deal in which she must work for him on his property for the next 7 days. As the days pass, their attraction and feelings for one another grow both characters learn that it's what's on the inside that counts.
The story is beautifully told, where the H/h come off disliking each other but in the end grow to care and love one another.Where the heroine is determined to show the hero how wrong he is about her while learning that he's also not what he seems to be. Where danger watches and waits. It's a story of suspense, romance and mystery. A must read!
Having become bored with the usual cookie cutter paranormal romances that have glutted the market recently I was looking for something new and different. I found it in this delightful story, beautifully told by what I hope is an up and coming author.
A small town in Louisiana is the backdrop for the sparks that fly between Alberta, a woman of privilege and Flynn a rough around the edges Cajun ex-marine. These two characters dislike each other immediately and this is made worse when Alberta befriends the Keegans, a family living in a house Flynn owns. Misunderstandings abound leading to Flynn threatening to evict the Keegans. Alberta, desperate to avoid this agrees to be Flynn's "Slave for a Week" so they can keep their home. Living and working closely together for a week and danger lurking on the outskirts force these two to learn more about each other and reassess their feelings.
It is apparant that this author enjoys writing and creating a story you can get lost in. Some phrases and words used lead me to think that this author is British but it does not diminish the flow of this very good story.

I really loved the story. Kept me interested. I have to admit.......I almost gave up on the book because it NEEDED edited very bad!!! If you can get by the wording it is a great book!! )
This was a very interesting book. It has great characters. Keeps you interested till the very end of the book.
